North American markets are closed today for public holidays, namely family day in Canada and Washington's birthday in the US, while China's Lunar New Year celebrations continue.

Among the market movers, Lucara Diamond reached a one-year high of C$1 on Friday in Toronto before closing up 13.8% to 99c.

The rise was on no news but follows a report this month suggesting the diamond market is poised for a rebound in 2021 and ahead of Lucara's 2020 results to be released next week.

The gold price is worth about US$1,824 an ounce on the spot market.

In South Africa, where Sunday marked the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the rand as the country's currency, precious metals producers closed lower.

Gold Fields (JSE: GFI) was down 3.12% and AngloGold Ashanti (JSE: ANG) off 2.85%.

Elsewhere, Fresnillo closed down about 1% in London, Freeport-McMoRan was up 0.77% in New York and BHP was rising, up more than 1.7% in morning Australian trade.
