US aluminium scrap prices rise; market under pressure

Aluminium scrap prices in the United States continued to rise this week, albeit at a slower pace, while limited trucking availability due to the Covid-19 pandemic put pressure on the market, according to sources.

Fastmarkets assessed the aluminium scrap mixed low copper clips, buying price, delivered Midwest secondary smelters at 44-46 cents per lb on Thursday September 3, up by a penny from the week previous. Similarly, the buying price for mixed high copper clips, delivered Midwest secondary smelters rose by the same amount to 42-44 cents per lb.The cost of freight has risen so much that in some instances, the difference between the quoted price and what was invoiced increased as much as 50%, according to sources.
