Tesla is experiencing a shortage of battery cells and is facing difficulties in scaling up production, its chief executive officer Elon Musk said at an earnings call on Wednesday January 27.

"There is a fundamentally a constraint on battery cell output... It's really hard to appreciate just how hard it is to scale production, it's the hardest thing in the world," he said.
Musk was responding to questions on whether the electric carmaker would produce electric vans.
"The main reason we have not accelerated new products like the Tesla Semi is that we simply don't have enough cells built. We could easily go into the production of the Semi, but we don't have enough cells for it right now," Musk said.

Tesla will only have sufficient cells for the Tesla Semi when it starts mass producing the 4680 form factor...
