Rio Tinto launches Start, a sustainability label for aluminium using blockchain

Rio Tinto has launched Start, the equivalent of a nutrition label for responsible aluminium, while the company continues its push to increase transparency and traceability in the industry.

Using blockchain technology, Start will give customers a digital sustainability label containing key information about the site where the aluminium was produced.
It will cover ten criteria: carbon footprint, water use, recycled content, energy sources, community investment, safety performance, diversity in leadership, business integrity, regulatory compliance and transparency.
According to Rio Tinto Aluminium chief executive officer Alf Barrios, Start aims to empower customers and consumers with information so they can make informed decisions about sustainable products.
