Price spread widens further for European ferro-chrome [UPDATED]

High-carbon ferro-chrome traded in a wider range last week as market participants weighed the impact of a near-term pick-up in demand against the longer-term impact of Covid-19 on the alloys markets.

The price spread for high-carbon ferro-chrome in Europe widened by a couple of cents per lb to $0.17 per lb in the week ended Friday May 1. Fastmarkets' price assessment for ferro-chrome high carbon 6-8.5% C, basis 60-70% Cr, max 1.5% Si, delivered Europe moved to $0.80-0.97 per lb major European destinations from $0.80-0.95 per lb a week earlier.
Deals were reported at higher prices following the increase in the ferro-chrome and charge chrome benchmark for shipments in the second quarter of 2020.

The total spread in deals reported to Fastmarkets was $0.20 per lb over the course of week. About 950 tonnes of high-carbon ferro-chrome business was reported between $0.78 and $0.98 per lb for material containing 60-70% chromium, with an offer of more...
