RAPAPORT... Gemological Science International (GSI) has launched a service that tests lab-grown diamond jewelry for undisclosed natural stones, noting that mixing had become increasingly common."During our routine grading process for laboratory-grown diamond jewelry, our team of experts [has] come across natural-diamond melee mixed into lab-grown diamond jewelry," said Debbie Azar, the organization's president and cofounder."Laboratory-grown diamond jewelry with 'undisclosed' natural diamonds is a new occurrence that we are starting to see with more frequency in our laboratories globally." The jewelry industry is trained to focus on detecting undisclosed synthetics, especially in melee, but the reverse phenomenon is an issue that also needs addressing, GSI added.Image: A natural diamond (second from left) in lab-grown diamond jewelry.
