New York spot gold fell $0.80 to $1,317.00 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.20 point to 829.32 while the TSX Gold Index added 1.51 points to 181.10. Barrick Gold Corp. (TXG), $33 last year, slumped another 53 cents to $9.47 on 1.39 million shares today. Alacer Gold Corp. (ASR) went the other way, gaining 10 cents to $2.12 on 928,000 shares. The company said this week that its Ardich prospect at Copler produced encouraging assays.

Ali Zamani and Brian Robertson's Mexican Gold Corp. (MEX), up three cents to 30 cents on 232,000 shares, has received assays of up to 4.51 grams of gold and 16.17 grams of silver per tonne plus 3.33 per cent copper -- an equivalent of 10.19 grams of gold per tonne -- over 38 metres. The assays are from a new hole drilled at the El Dorado dike contact zone on its Las Minas project in Mexico. The test was sited to confirm the continuity of high-grade mineralization hit last year, about 150 metres to the northeast. That test had produced 5.39 grams of gold and 17.1 grams of silver per tonne plus 2.2 per cent copper, an equivalent of 9.24 grams of gold per tonne, over 38 metres.
