Soaring freight rates and tightening availability for prompt material pushed European manganese flake prices to a three-year high in the week ended Friday January 8, with more increases expected this week, market sources have told Fastmarkets.

Fastmarkets' price assessment for manganese, 99.7% electrolytic manganese flake, in-whs Rotterdam, jumped by 6.8% to $2,450-2,550 per tonne on Friday from the earlier mid-week assessment at $2,230-2,450 per tonne, and $2,120-2,280 per tonne on January 1.
Prices were now at their highest since October 22, 2018, when they were $2,500-2,600 per tonne, according to Fastmarkets' historical data. But that was down from $3,000-3,100 per tonne in July that year, the highest for the past eight years.
