Brazil aluminium association Abal seeks urgent talks on import quota

The Brazilian aluminium industry association, Abal, has requested a meeting with national trade authorities to discuss the primary metal import quota because it is quickly being used up because of a recovery in demand and tighter local supply, the group told Fastmarkets on Thursday September 10.

"We are observing market necessities and have already asked for a meeting with Secint/Camex to assess the situation," Abal president Milton Rego said in a written statement on Thursday.
Camex is the country's foreign trade chamber, and Secint refers to the foreign trade secretariat of the economy ministry.

Brazil allows a limited tonnage of primary aluminium to be imported into the country without being subject to the standard 6% import duty. That limit was set at 150,000 tonnes for the first half of 2020, but on June 24 the quota period was extended to cover the whole year, although the...
